"Return of the Patriot"
An Acrylic Portrait of Representative Ron Paul

What is a Giclée?Animation of the paintingThe Original

Another reason I decided to create this website is to promote my own painting of "Dr. No." As you may have already read on the homepage, I unveiled the painting at the first meeting of the Illinois Patriots Political Action Committee on January 10th, 2008. I have titled the painting, "Return of the Patriot," and among other reasons for this undertaking is the directive for artists givenby 19th Century painter Francis Bicknell Carpenter in his book, "The Inner Life of Abraham Lincoln: Six Months at the White House," in which he states:

"That Art should aim to embody and express the spirit and best thought of its own age seems self-evident. If it fails to do this, whatever else it may accomplish, it falls short of its highest object. It cannot dwell always among classic forms, nor clothe its conceptions in the imagery of an old and worn-out world. It must move on if it is to keep pace with that "increasing purpose which through the ages runs," and its ideals must be wrought out of the strife of a living humanity."

It is in the spirit of these words that I paint Representative Dr. Ron Paul. Doing this is made all the more appropriate by the fact that I portray Francis Carpenter at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum in an exhibit of the Cabinet Room during the first reading of the Emancipation Proclamation the painting of which was Carpenter's magnum opus.

Naturally after securing this strange position, being a painter myself, I decided to attempt a portait of Abraham Lincoln which has gained some interest with collectors of Lincolnania, but the statement from Carpenter's memoirs of the time he spent working on his painting in the dining room of the White House in 1864 haunted me. I knew I had to "express and embody the spirit and best thought" of my own age and suddenly realized, after a suggestion from Greg Bishop, co-founder of IPPAC and 19th Congressional District Delegate Candidate, that I should paint Dr. Paul.

- What is a Giclée?

Many ask about the museum-quality printing known as giclée. It is French for "sprayed ink," and is an archival process used for fine art prints on high quality paper or stretched-canvas with non-fading, richly pigmented ink. Even on paper the prints look closer to the original painting than any other printing process. In many cases the paintings look even better after being photographed and printed in this manner.

Often a giclée is hand-embellished either by the artist. Giclée are substantially less expensive than buying the originals and it is the standard in the art world to number each print so they have their own value. If they are hand-embellished they are even more valuable.

I choose to embellish the sides of my canvasses so that they have a "gallery wrap" as the original does which is appropriate for hanging as is, without a frame. However a frame can be used but the surface of the painting cannot be obscured by any more than half an inch at the most or one quarter at best. I am auctioning the smallest size I do first, 18" X 24" vertical alignment, and I usually do two other sizes, 30" X 40" and 36" X 48" the latter being the size of the original. All sizes will be available in the store regardless of any running auction and 20% of the after-cost profit will go directly to the Ron Paul 2008 campaign.

- Animation of the painting

I took pictures the whole time I worked on Return of the Patriot from November 22nd to January 10th, 2008. This is an animation I made from those pictures. You will probably need a broadband connection to see this as it is made up of 90 individual frames.

- The Original

The plan right now for the original is to auction it and divide the after-cost profit between the Ron Paul Campaign and the Illinois Patriots PAC and another Ron Paul Independent project such as the Ron Paul Blimp or Revolution Radio. Suggestions will be welcome on the bulletin board for the best project or if the painting fetches a high enough price, we could give to several suggested RP projects.
