VHNA FACTSHEET
Purpose The Purpose of VHNA is to improve quality of life for residents and preserve value for property owners. Our goals are to improve the economic integrity of our neighborhoods by encouraging and facilitating development of new properties and upgrading of existing properties; to protect the health and welfare of the residents; to encourage and facilitate participation in local government; and to foster pride in our homes and neighborhoods. Association Area The association area includes from the south side of Jefferson Street to the north side of South Grand Avenue and from the east side of Walnut Street up to but not including Second Street. This area encompasses a wide variety of residential and commercial properties including many of historical significance. Membership in our organization, however, is not restricted to residents and property owners in our area. History In the heart of our VHNA territory, lays the historic Vinegar Hill District, an area southwest of our current Illinois State Capitol building settled predominately by Irish immigrants. The Vinegar Hill name was first adopted by residents of the area in the 19th century and is believed to be in honor of Irish independence fighters defeated by the British at Vinegar Hill, near Enniscorthy Ireland in 1798. Our neighborhood association has been around for about ten years, was incorporated in 1998, and adopted the Vinegar Hill name in 2003, in an effort to reclaim the historic identity of our area. Meetings VHNA meets on the second Monday of each month, at 7:00 p.m. in room 201, at Laurel United Methodist Church, located on the corner of South Grand Avenue and Walnut Street. 2006 Officers President: Bill
